Counselling Approach and Methods
Welcome!!
Linette sees each individual as unique, valuable, and gifted. She aims to understand what your needs, preferences, and personal goals are so that counselling can be individualized to you. Linette uses evidence-based models of therapy during sessions (described below) to help clients heal, grow, and move forward in their life. It is Linette's mission to provide counselling that will help you gain a greater sense of identity, value, purpose, and direction in your life.
Please note: Exploring your faith and beliefs in order to receive support in navigating the challenges of life (pain, hurt, life circumstance) is welcomed upon your request. My goal is to provide a safe space where you can ask the hard honest questions, and instead of being given answers, enter on a journey together of seeking to reconcile the conflict within you and find greater peace.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – The goal of this model is to help people identify their values and be able to line up their actions with their values. You will learn new ways to respond to the pain in your life (physical, emotional, relational, psychological, spiritual). These new ways of relating to the pain in your life help you to stop fighting against the pain, which leads to suffering, and instead creates space for you to walk forward in a meaningful direction. Do you find that symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotional and psychological pain continue to create suffering in your life? If so, this therapy may be right for you!
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) - The goal of this model is to help people reduce suffering and build a meaningful life by learning skills to:
a) help manage intense emotions
b) improve interpersonal relationships and end destructive relationships
c) reduce self-destructive behaviours
d) balance acceptance of one’s self with the need to grow and change
The four areas of skill development include: Mindfulness Skills, Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills, Emotion Regulation Skills, and Distress Tolerance Skills.
Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (RO-DBT) - RO-DBT helps people who naturally fall towards overcontrol coping strategies grow in receptivity, flexibility, and social-connectedness. Some areas of skill development will include:
a) Understanding Radical Openness and when it is needed - be able to receive corrective feedback
b) Understand emotions and 5 cues in the body (safety, novelty, reward, threat, overwhelm)
c) Learn to activate Social Safety System and show signals of safety towards people you want to become closer to.
d) Increase kindness towards self/others - Increase Social Connection
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - The goal of this model is to understand the connection between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours; learn how to restructure our thought patterns; and help us change problematic core beliefs (how we see ourselves, others, and the world).
The Following may also be utilized in session as needed:
Polyvagal Theory - How to understand the nervous system and its involvement in mental and emotional wellness.
Psychoeducation - Sharing specific information and strategies to enhance understanding and knowledge in a particular area.
